Visible documents: PDF and images
A PDF or scan works well as a reference, print source, or archival view. The musical meaning of visible symbols is not automatically available as structured notation. If the goal is editable notation, a recognition and verification step is normally required.
Structured notation: MusicXML and MXL
MusicXML was designed for exchanging digital notation. It can carry pitches, durations, voices, meters, and many other notation details. MXL is a compressed MusicXML container form. For moving editable notation between applications, this family is often more suitable than PDF.
Performance information: MIDI
MIDI describes events and controller data. It is strong for performance, virtual instruments, and DAW editing, but it is not designed to preserve every engraving decision. A MIDI file can therefore sound musically correct while producing a different notation spelling when imported into score software.
Sound: audio
WAV, AIFF, MP3, and other audio formats contain audible sound. They do not automatically contain the underlying notes as editable events. Analysis systems can infer musical information from audio, but inference is not the same as opening already structured note data.
Project files and interchange formats
DAWs and notation programs often have proprietary project formats. These can preserve more application-specific detail but are less universal for exchange. For archiving and handoff, it is often useful to keep both the project file and an appropriate interchange or output format.
For every conversion, ask what must survive
- Visual layout?
- Editable notation structure?
- Exact performance timing and controller data?
- The actual sound?
- Application-specific mix, plugin, or layout settings?
Keep the original
PDF → MusicXML, audio → MIDI, or MIDI → notation are not guaranteed lossless translations. Keep the source file and record what transformation took place so later differences can be traced to the source or the conversion step.
If you want to derive a suitable musical workflow from an existing format, Intent-to-Playable is the relevant next step.
